Quilts on Barns Road Rally Fall FUN!
The Racine Arts Council and Real Racine are hosting our 2nd “Quilts on Barns Road Rally”, October 9th utilizing our driving tour map of 28 quilted barns. What better way to celebrate our beautiful county than to travel throughout rural and urban areas looking for quilted barns, driving down rustic roads, eating a caramel apple and enjoying the fall color!
Quilts on Barns, the Beauty of Rural Art, was started in 2008 by quilt enthusiast Kathi Wilson when she saw quilt barn patterns in Grundy County Iowa. As she took a barn tour with her mother in 2006, Wilson asked, “Why don’t we have something like this in Racine County!”. That started a partnership with the Racine Arts Council that has become a tourist attraction and a local folk art tour, each year adding a couple patterns to enhance the beauty of the “Positive Power of Art”.

New this year, “Wheat Matters” is installed on a barn of an artisan bread baker in Burlington. You will be treated to home baked cookies and a “Live” music performance by Mark Paffrath from 11:00 until 12:30. Mark has been charming audiences for longer than he can believe! From the concert and festival stage to your local bar and grill or coffeehouse, his thoughtfully chosen interpretations and well-crafted original music are as much about his history as where he would like to be; as much about how the world is, as the way he’d like to see it. His observations, repartee and humor are self-deprecating but keen, quirky and refreshing. “Wisconsin Heartland” installed on the Malchine Farm Homestead barn in Wind Lake, was designed by the WUHS Art Club. Visit Jean Jacobson’s “Tulip Basket” pattern and catch a “live” music performance of folk duo Fendrick & Peck from 1:30 – 3:00. Their music, though familiar and comforting in sound, is noted for its exquisite harmony, lyrics, and composition. Along the way enjoy corn, soybean and dairy farms, pumpkin patches with fall festivals, beautiful rivers and lakes, bike trails, urban shops, rustic roads, historical Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, views of the Wind Point Lighthouse and beaches on Lake Michigan.
