The Choral Arts Society of Southeastern Wisconsin will present a holiday concert, "Lessons and Carols", for the entire family. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Waterford, and at 3 p.m. Sunday Dec. 2 at the Siena Center, Caledonia.
This concert will honor the 100th anniversary of The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The wondrous Christmas story is told through spiritual readings and transcendent music. The 65 voices of CAS will be enhanced by accomplished guest soloist, baritone Nicholas Barootian, and the festive tones of the Choral Arts Brass. Local choirs will lend their voices to an original version of “Silent Night” in celebration of the 200th anniversary of that beloved carol. You are warmly invited to join us in two of our area’s most beautiful venues. Listen, sing along, and share fellowship as we celebrate the season of hope and love.
The Service of Nine Lessons and Carols had its Kings College, Cambridge premiere in 1818, and has become an international treasure. This stunning holiday offering has become a beloved CAS tradition. A BBC list of the 25 greatest hymns and carols also provided inspiration for this year’s selections.
The words for “Silent Night” were written in 1816 by Joseph Mohr. In 1818, Franz Gruber composed a melody for this text. The new composition was performed on Christmas Eve 1818, in St. Nicholas Church in Austria. Traveling choirs spread the carol in Europe. In 1839, the Rainer Family Singers gave the song its American debut near Old Trinity Church, Wall Street. http://www.stillenacht.at/en/index.asp
